A Chinese national living in Andover, Massachusetts, has been charged with fraudulent voter registration and voting after allegedly impersonating another Chinese national who was a lawful permanent resident. Federal prosecutors allege that Yupeng Sun, 33, used the victim’s identity to register to vote in October 2024 and later cast an early ballot in the victim’s name in the 2024 presidential election. Sun allegedly then submitted anonymous tips to federal immigration authorities in 2026 falsely accusing the victim of illegally voting as a non-U.S. citizen. USCIS assisted in the investigation. Authorities also allege that Sun impersonated the same victim and his wife in fraudulent USCIS filings requesting abandonment of their lawful permanent resident status. As a result, the couple reportedly had their Green Cards confiscated upon returning from an international trip and were placed into removal proceedings. Sun faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine for each voter-fraud charge, as well as potential deportation after serving any sentence. The charges remain allegations, and Sun is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
