Samir Ousman Alsheikh, 74, a former Syrian prison warden and provincial governor, was sentenced to 60 years in prison for torturing prisoners and committing immigration fraud. A jury convicted him in March 2026 of conspiracy to commit torture, three counts of torture, visa fraud, and attempted naturalization fraud. Trial evidence showed that he ordered and participated in severe abuse while overseeing Adra Prison near Damascus from approximately 2005 to 2008, including targeting prisoners who supported political detainees or refused orders to harm them. Three victims testified about the torture they experienced and witnessed.
Alsheikh also concealed his past from U.S. immigration authorities to obtain a Green Card and seek U.S. citizenship. He entered the United States in 2020 and remained in custody following his July 2024 arrest. Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI investigated the case, with significant assistance from USCIS and specialized units focused on human rights violations and war crimes. Federal authorities encouraged anyone with information about suspected human rights abusers in the United States to report it through ICE’s tip line, email, or online reporting form.
