USCIS will release a revised edition of Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, on September 18, 2026, with an edition date of 09/18/26. The revision aligns the form with the new Public Charge Ground of Inadmissibility Final Rule and replaces the current 01/20/25 edition. USCIS is providing an advance preview of the new form and instructions because there will be no grace period for transitioning between editions. Applicants must pay close attention to the filing date. USCIS will accept the 01/20/25 edition only if it is postmarked or electronically submitted before September 18, 2026; filings using that edition on or after September 18 will be rejected. Conversely, the new 09/18/26 edition must not be filed before September 18 and will only be accepted if postmarked or electronically submitted on or after that date.
