USCIS assisted in an investigation that led the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas to file a denaturalization case against Harinder Singh, also known as Harinder Singh Sanghera and Rushpal Singh. The government alleges that Singh, who was born in India, unlawfully obtained U.S. citizenship by concealing his previous immigration history and using a false identity. Under federal immigration law, naturalized citizenship can be revoked if it was obtained illegally or through concealment or willful misrepresentation of material facts. Singh was first encountered by immigration officials at JFK International Airport in 1991 under the name Rushpal Singh and was ordered deported in 1995, although there is no record that he ever left the United States. In 1996, he applied for immigration benefits under the name Harinder Singh while allegedly changing his date of birth, date of entry, and the basis of his immigration claim. He later obtained a Green Card in 2000 and became a U.S. citizen eight years later without disclosing his prior identity or deportation history. The U.S. government is now seeking to revoke his citizenship and cancel his certificate of naturalization.
