Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem has announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia, stating that the designation was always intended to be temporary and not a pathway to permanent residency. According to DHS and USCIS, current conditions in Ethiopia no longer meet the statutory requirements for TPS, as they no longer pose a serious threat to the personal safety of returning Ethiopian nationals. The decision is framed as an effort to restore integrity to the U.S. immigration system. Ethiopian nationals who do not have another lawful basis to remain in the United States have 60 days to voluntarily depart. DHS is encouraging voluntary departure through the CBP Home Mobile App, which allows individuals to self-report their departure and offers incentives including a complimentary plane ticket, a $1,000 exit bonus, and possible future legal immigration opportunities. After February 13, 2026, DHS may arrest and deport Ethiopian nationals who remain without lawful status, and those who are forcibly removed may be permanently barred from returning to the United States.
