The Department of Homeland Security announced that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Burma (Myanmar) will end effective January 26, 2026. By law, DHS must reassess country conditions before a TPS designation expires to determine whether statutory criteria are still met. After a full review with interagency partners, Secretary Kristi Noem concluded that Burma’s conditions have improved enough—citing the end of the state of emergency, plans for free elections, ceasefire progress, and better local governance—to no longer justify TPS protections. USCIS and the State Department agreed that Burmese nationals can now safely return home, and Secretary Noem determined that continuing TPS would not serve U.S. national interests. As a result, TPS for Burma will be formally terminated, restoring the program’s intended temporary nature.
