U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has enhanced its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program to help states verify that only U.S. citizens vote in federal elections. The upgrade allows states to confirm voter citizenship using just the last four digits of a Social Security number instead of the full nine, improving efficiency and security. This change aligns with Executive Order 14248 on protecting election integrity and enables agencies to create SAVE cases without a DHS identifier. As of October 2025, over 205 million verification queries have been processed, a massive increase from 25 million in 2024. Currently, 26 states are using or preparing to use SAVE for voter verification, as USCIS urges all states to adopt the program to strengthen trust in U.S. elections.
